A Work of Prayer

The Little Brothers of the Eucharist are focused on the work of contemplative prayer, a prayer of the heart. Encountering the Person of Jesus is the center of our life. It is a mission for today’s world, darkened by sin and suffering, yet brightened by faith and hope in Jesus. Rooted in the tradition of the Catholic Church through great figures such the Fathers of the Desert and Bl. Charles de Foucauld and faithful to the Church’s Magisterium, the Little Brothers of the Eucharist desire to respond to Pope John Paul II’s call for a new evangelization. To people of today, especially to youth, we extend a challenge to discover through the heart "all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" hidden in Jesus Christ (Col. 2:2). This is the goal of the Little Brothers of the Eucharist.

We accomplish this work of prayer in surroundings of nature and solitude. Since the earliest times of Christianity, solitude and the experience of the "desert" have been valued as settings for contemplative prayer. Likewise today a solitary setting in natural surroundings can be helpful for those who want to deepen the life of the heart.

In rustic solitude in diverse geographical settings, with a grouping of hermitages dispersed in nature around a central house and chapel, the Little Brothers of the Eucharist recalls the first groupings of the faithful in places of solitude during the early history of the Church, and those so popular in nineteenth-century Russia.
An aspect of the Little Brothers of the Eucharist is the desire to respond to the Holy Father’s invitation to welcome the spiritual richness of the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Churches. We wish to live a spiritual communion between "East and West."

Jesus desires our prayers for the world today. We see so much suffering around us. In particular, there is the suffering of the human heart that does not know God or that does not have faith and hope in His mercy. We recall Jesus’ words, "Blessed are the merciful" (Mt. 5:7). We wish to receive and spread forth this Divine Mercy in the spirit of St. Faustina Kowalska. Thus, our vocation is to pray for the world around us, especially for its conversion to a loving faith.

One purpose of the Little Brothers of the Eucharist is to contribute to the flowering of holiness among the laity. While welcoming people from diverse age-groups and backgrounds, the Little Brothers of the Eucharist was founded in a special sense for the youth of today. Despite the many negative aspects of today’s society, the Holy Spirit continues to inspire in many young people an intense hunger for a personal relationship with God and a wish to share that relationship with others.

The Eucharist, Adoration and Mary

Following the inspiration of Bl. Charles de Foucauld, we have the Eucharist at the center of our spiritual life, with daily Mass and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. We want to foster a spirit of adoration wherever we are. We try to place ourselves spiritually at the foot of the tabernacle, as if in vigil day and night before all tabernacles of the world where the Lord is present.

We wish to be in constant union with Mary the Mother of God, as were Peter and the apostles when they prayed with Mary in anticipation of Pentecost, to receive the Holy Spirit.

For a spirit of constant prayer we encourage the practice of the continuous invocation of the Sacred Names of Jesus and Mary, profiting from the heritage that comes down to us through the Eastern Churches.

Patronage of the Archangels

For all those associated with the Little Brothers of the Eucharist we pray for three main fruits:

Under the patronage of Saint Michael the Archangel, we pray for the restoring of God’s image within us. Evil tries to distort us; prayer liberates us and restores the divine image. Many people today sense the need for this "repairing" effect of prayer. The Little Brothers of the Eucharist are deeply aware of the woundedness of humanity and the need for our spiritual dignity to be restored.

Under the patronage of Saint Raphael the Archangel, we pray for a nurturing of the spiritual life: healing and encouraging the unique person within us, respecting each person’s good will and searching for their particular calling.

Under the patronage of Saint Gabriel the Archangel, the angel of Mary, we pray for sanctification. Grace brings us the mysterious life of God Himself. The fruits of grace within us can be limitless, because the life of God is limitless.

The Organization

With the Little Brothers of the Eucharist each person lives the balance of solitary and fraternal life that seems appropriate after consultation with their spiritual director. Accommodations are rustic and poor, with some manual work being a part of each day. Mass is celebrated daily and each evening we gather for an hour of silent Eucharistic adoration. The Divine Offices, an additional hour of adoration, the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy are prayed in private. Spiritual direction is available as appropriate and there are regular conferences on the spiritual life. A small library is available as a resource for individual study.

The Little Brothers of the Eucharist comprises both priests and brothers. After a suitable time of formation and discernment, those called to be consecrated profess vows according to Canon 603 of poverty, chastity and obedience in the hands of the bishop, who is the canonical superior.
